A tire blowout can ruin more than your afternoon—it can cause costly damage or even a dangerous accident. While some road hazards can’t be helped, many tire issues are preventable with a few quick checks you can do yourself. These three simple steps will help keep you safe and your tires in top shape.
1. Check Your Tire Pressure
Underinflated or overinflated tires are one of the leading causes of uneven wear, poor fuel economy, and tire failure. The recommended PSI (pounds per square inch) for your tires can usually be found in your owner’s manual or on a sticker inside the driver’s door. Most fall between 30–35 PSI.
Use a tire gauge to check each tire and adjust using an air pump if needed. Be sure to check when your tires are “cold” (before driving) for the most accurate reading.
2. Measure Your Tread Depth
Your tire tread gives you traction on the road—especially in wet conditions. As your tread wears down, your stopping distance increases and your risk of hydroplaning rises.
To check your tread, try the penny test:
- Insert a penny into the groove with Lincoln’s head facing down.
- If you can see the top of his head, it’s time for new tires.

3. Inspect the Sidewalls
Cracks, bulges, and worn spots on the sides of your tires are often warning signs of hidden damage. These issues can result from hitting curbs or potholes, improper inflation, or just aging rubber. Also, check the wheel rims for bends, which can affect the seal between the tire and wheel. If you notice sidewall damage, don’t wait—it’s a common cause of blowouts.
